Microwave Revival: Quick and Effective Cleaning Methods

Microwave Revival Quick and Effective Cleaning Methods copy

Why Regular Microwave Cleaning Matters

Microwaves are a cornerstone of modern kitchens, quick, convenient, and endlessly useful. But with daily use comes spills, splatters, and lingering smells that can turn a helpful appliance into a health hazard. A dirty microwave isn’t just unpleasant; it can affect your food’s taste, decrease efficiency, and become a breeding ground for bacteria.

Fortunately, keeping your microwave hygienic and fresh doesn’t require harsh chemicals. Using natural steam cleaning methods and Bio-D’s effective, eco-friendly products, you can safely tackle everything from burnt-on messes to stubborn odours, all while protecting your health and the environment.

What You’ll Need

Before diving into the cleaning process, gather the following items:

  • Bio-D All Purpose Sanitiser
  • Bio-D Multi Surface Cleaner
  • Bio-D Washing Up Liquid
  • White vinegar or lemon (for steam cleaning)
  • Bowl of water
  • Microfibre cloth or sponge
  • Soft-bristle brush or old toothbrush
  • Toothpicks or cocktail sticks (for vents)

Step 1: Start with Natural Steam Cleaning

One of the easiest and most effective ways to loosen food residue and eliminate odours is with a simple steam clean:

Option A: Vinegar Method

  • Fill a microwave-safe bowl with 1 cup of water and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar.
  • Microwave on high for 3–5 minutes, allowing it to steam up the inside.
  • Leave the door closed for a few more minutes to let the steam soften grime.
  • Carefully remove the bowl and wipe the interior with a damp cloth.

Option B: Lemon Method

  • Slice a lemon in half, squeeze the juice into a bowl of water, and drop the halves in.
  • Follow the same steaming process above for a fresh citrus scent.

Step 2: Deep Clean the Interior

Once loosened by steam, it’s time to wipe away splatters and residue:

  • Pour Bio-D Multi Surface Cleaner onto a cloth or directly onto surfaces.
  • Wipe down the sides, ceiling, and base of the microwave thoroughly.
  • For tough stains, let the cleaner sit for a minute, then scrub gently with a non-abrasive sponge.
  • Use a soft-bristle brush or old toothbrush for corners and seals.

Bio-D’s Multi Surface Cleaner is formulated with natural ingredients that cut through grease and grime without synthetic fragrances or harmful chemicals, safe for both you and your kitchen.

Step 3: Clean the Turntable and Removable Parts

Don’t forget to clean the microwave plate and support ring:

  • Remove the glass turntable, support ring, and any microwave safe accessories.
  • Wash them in warm water using Bio-D Washing Up Liquid, which is tough on food grease but gentle on skin and surfaces.
  • Rinse and dry thoroughly before placing them back.

Step 4: Tackle Exterior and Keypads

Smudges, fingerprints, and dust love the outside of your microwave.

  • Spray Bio-D All Purpose Sanitiser onto a cloth (never directly on electronics).
  • Wipe down the door, handle, control panel, and exterior surfaces.
  • Use a cotton bud or soft brush for buttons and crevices.

Bio-D’s All Purpose Sanitiser is fast acting and certified to BSEN 1276 standards, neutralising 99.9% of harmful bacteria, perfect for food prep areas.

Step 5: Remove Odours Naturally

Still noticing an odour after cleaning? Try these:

  • Place a bowl of baking soda inside and leave it overnight to absorb lingering smells.
  • Microwave a bowl of water with lemon slices for 2 minutes for a quick freshen-up.
  • Regular use of vinegar or lemon steam cleaning helps keep smells at bay long-term.

Step 6: Clean the Vents

Microwave vents often collect grease and dust, affecting air flow and performance.

  • Use a dry toothbrush, soft brush, or toothpick to remove dust from the vent area.
  • Wipe the outer vent covers with a damp cloth and Multi Surface Cleaner.

Avoid using water directly inside the vent to prevent damage to electrical components.

Prevention Tips: Keep It Cleaner for Longer

A few small habits can drastically reduce the need for deep cleaning:

  • Cover food with a microwave-safe lid or paper towel to prevent splatter.
  • Wipe spills immediately after use — the longer they sit, the harder they are to clean.
  • Steam clean once a week and deep clean once a month.
  • Leave the microwave door open for a few minutes after use to prevent moisture build-up.
