Do you need inspiration for a sustainable Jubilee street party?
The first weekend in June marks the nation’s celebrations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
Running from 2 June to 5 June, there’ll be a whole host of activities to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70-year reign including beacon lighting, a star-studded concert, street parties and even The Big Jubilee Lunch.
If you’re heading to a street party, or have decided to host your own, there are steps you can take to make the event as sustainable as possible.
Take a look at some of our top tips for a sustainable street party:
It’s no secret that balloons are a disaster for the environment and wildlife. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still have all the colour balloons bring to an event. You can hang pom poms and decorations made from recyclable or reusable materials such as special seed paper or old scraps of fabric.
You can make bunting, tablecloths, napkins and more with fabric bought from a charity shop. Let your imagination run wild and think about what you could make out of second-hand clothes and curtains. You could also scour the shelves for serving plates instead of buying them brand new.
Banish the disposable paper plates and cups. Instead, opt for more sustainable options made from the likes of bamboo, palm leaf and sugarcane. There are some eco-friendly paper plates out there, but significantly less chemicals are used to make plates from bamboo etc.
Bring your own cutlery. Ask your guests to bring their own knives, forks, and spoons from home to stop the plastic and wood piling up. They can then take them home and stick them straight in the dishwasher to save on water, too. Check out our new dishwashing tablets here.
Don’t automatically give someone a straw with their drink – most of the time they don’t really need one. If a guest does ask for a straw, keep some metal straws nearby for them to use instead of using plastic.
Why not provide a fully vegan menu for your guests? It’s great for the environment and kind to animals, and if there’s any meat-eaters attending it’s a great way to show them the deliciousness of plant-based food.
Being eco-friendly shouldn’t stop when the guests leave. Being mindful during your clean-up about what can be recycled or composted will also help the environment, as will using Bio-D cleaning products. Our All Purpose Sanitiser is a great multi-use product for cleaning up spills and wiping down surfaces.
