Our History

Historic photographs from Bio-D's early years

Micheal Barwell

Back in the 1980s, our founder, Michael Barwell, worked in commercial ship maintenance, tackling tough cleaning jobs that required heavy duty safety gear, including a respirator. He was shocked to discover that many of the harsh chemicals he used at work were also found in everyday household cleaning products.

Determined to find a safer, more sustainable alternative, Michael set out to create cleaning products that were both effective and environmentally responsible. In 1989, Bio-D was born, built on the belief that cleaning should be powerful yet gentle on people and the planet.

Lloyd Atkin

Today, Bio-D is led by Lloyd Atkin, our first ever employee and now Managing Director. Born and bred in Hull, Lloyd has been instrumental in expanding our range while staying true to Michael’s original vision. We continue to manufacture high-performance, plant-based cleaning products that are ethical, cruelty-free, and kind to the environment, without compromising on results.

Over the years, we’ve hit some major milestones, becoming a B Corp certified business, winning the King’s Award. As we grow, our mission remains the same: to help people clean their homes safely, sustainably, and affordably.
