Refilling Just One Bottle a Month Could Cut 29,500 Tonnes of Plastic Waste Every Year

Refilling Just One Bottle a Month Could Cut 29500 Tonnes of Plastic Waste Every Year copy

Refill One Bottle a Month, Help Save the Planet

The UK has a plastic problem. But what if one tiny habit could help fix it?

At Bio-D, we’ve crunched the numbers and found that if every person in the UK refilled and reused just one plastic bottle a month, it would prevent over 29,500 tonnes of plastic from ending up in landfill or being incinerated each year.*

That’s the equivalent weight of:

  • 3 Eiffel Towers
  • 4,900 adult African elephants
  • 12 fully loaded freight trains

All from just one refill per person per month.

Why This Matters More Than Ever

According to the latest population estimates from the Office for National Statistics, there are approximately 68.3 million people living in the UK. If each person refilled just one standard 750ml bottle per month instead of tossing it in the bin and buying new, we’d save an enormous amount of plastic waste over the course of a year.

While recycling is important, it’s not enough. A large portion of recyclable plastic still ends up in landfill or gets incinerated due to contamination or lack of processing capacity. Refilling skips that risk altogether, it’s a preventative solution that stops new plastic from being created in the first place.

As Lloyd Atkin, Managing Director of Bio-D, puts it:

“Plastic waste has long been a problem both in the UK and worldwide. Whilst recycling is a clear solution, it has been found that despite our best efforts, waste plastic destined to be recycled often ends up in landfill sites.

“Refilling and reusing plastic bottles is another simple solution that reduces waste whilst also providing cost-saving benefits to shoppers who no longer need to buy new bottles during their weekly shop.”

What Is Refilling, and Why Should You Do It?

Refilling means reusing your existing container, like a cleaning spray bottle or laundry liquid bottle, by topping it up from a larger refill pack online or in-store refill station. Rather than throwing away a perfectly usable bottle, you give it a second (or third, or tenth) life.

And refill options have come a long way. You can now refill a wide range of everyday essentials, including:

  • Washing Up liquid
  • Laundry Liquid
  • All Purpose Sanitiser
  • Hand Wash
  • Washing Powder

Refills are also more affordable in the long run, especially when you buy in bulk. You’re not paying for packaging over and over again and you’re helping the environment while you’re at it.

A Sustainability Win That Scales

At Bio-D, we believe small actions add up. That’s why we offer most of our products in bulk sizes like 5L and 20L, which can be used at home or in commercial settings to refill smaller bottles again and again.

We also partner with many independent retailers across the UK who operate refill stations, making it easier than ever to top up locally.

And we take things one step further: our Closed Loop Refill Service collects, cleans and reuses our 20L containers, meaning even our bulk packaging doesn’t go to waste.

Refilling in the Context of New Regulations

The UK has implemented extended producer responsibility (EPR) and stricter packaging regulations, requiring businesses to report and take accountability for the waste they produce.

Heather Nixon, Bio-D’s NPD, Regulatory and Sustainability Manager, explains how refilling fits into the bigger picture:

“We’re entering a new era of sustainability, where responsibility is shifting back to both producers and consumers. Refilling is one of the most powerful, low-barrier changes people can make. It reduces demand for new plastics, cuts energy use, and encourages circular systems that are much more resilient.”

She adds:

“At Bio-D, we’ve always believed that effective sustainability starts with smart design, offering reusable formats and ensuring our packaging can be refilled, recycled or returned. The goal isn’t just reducing waste, it’s redesigning the way we consume.”

Join the Refill Revolution This Plastic Free July

July marks Plastic Free July, a global movement helping people reduce their single-use plastic waste. There’s no better time to start a refill habit, especially when it can have such a big impact.

Here are three easy ways to start:

  1. Pick one product in your home, like Hand Wash or Washing Up Liquid and commit to refilling it instead of buying new.
  2. Visit your local refill shop or order a 5L or 20L refill online.
  3. Tell a friend. The more people join the movement, the more plastic we save.

One Small Change. One Big Impact.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the scale of the plastic waste crisis, you’re not alone. But as this data shows, you don’t need to change everything to make a difference. You just need to refill one bottle, once a month, and if everyone does the same, the effect is massive.

Together, we can take simple steps toward a more sustainable future.
