How to Wash Your Cleaning Cloths and Sponges the Eco-Friendly Way

How to Wash Your Cleaning Cloths and Sponges the Eco Friendly Way copy

Keeping things clean shouldn’t mean harming the planet.

We all rely on cleaning cloths and sponges to keep our homes hygienic, but how often do we think about cleaning them? Over time, these hard-working household items collect bacteria, grime, and product residue, which can lead to unpleasant odours and less effective cleaning.

The good news? You can easily refresh your cloths and sponges using gentle, eco-friendly methods that align with your low impact lifestyle. At Bio-D, we’re all about safe, sustainable, and effective cleaning and we’ve even partnered with fellow B Corp Seep, whose compostable and plastic-free sponges and cloths you’ll find on our website.

Here’s our guide to cleaning your cloths and sponges the right way, using planet-friendly methods and Bio-D products you can trust.

Why Cleaning Your Cloths and Sponges Matters

Your cloths and sponges touch everything, from countertops and sinks to high-contact surfaces like door handles and taps. Over time, this leads to a build-up of bacteria and germs, which can transfer back to your surfaces if not cleaned regularly.

Worse still, many people throw them away far too soon, especially when they start to smell. But with proper care, you can extend the life of your cleaning tools, cut down on waste, and reduce your reliance on single-use items.

How to Clean Cleaning Cloths (Without Compromising the Planet)

Reusable cleaning cloths, especially when made from sustainable materials like those from Seep, are a brilliant alternative to disposable wipes or paper towels. But they do need regular washing to stay fresh and effective.

Here’s how to clean your cloths:

  • Step 1: Pre-soak if stained
If your cloths are stained or particularly grubby, soak them in warm water with a little Bio-D Laundry Liquid for around 20 minutes. This helps loosen dirt and gently lifts stains before washing. Alternatively, use our Laundry & Stain Remover bar for the stain.
  • Step 2: Wash on a warm cycle
Pop your cloths in the washing machine with your regular laundry (they go well with towels) and wash at a warm temperature. Avoid very hot washes, which can wear the fabric out more quickly.
  • Step 3: Skip the fabric conditioner
Resist the temptation to add conditioner! While it’s lovely for your clothes, it can coat cloth fibres and reduce their absorbency and cleaning power. Bio-D Laundry Liquid cleans effectively without the need for added softeners, so you’re all set.
  • Step 4: Air dry
Line drying is best for the planet and your cloths. Lay them flat or hang to dry completely before folding or storing.

How to Clean Sponges (Yes, You Really Should)

Sponges are notorious for trapping bacteria, especially when they stay damp for long periods. Luckily, there are simple ways to refresh them without resorting to wasteful replacements.

Here are two common methods for disinfecting sponges:

Dogbone1

  • Microwave Method
Wet your sponge, then place it in the microwave on high for two minutes. This high heat helps neutralise lingering bacteria. Be sure to let it cool down before handling, then rinse it under cold water and wring out thoroughly.
  • Boiling Water Method
Place your sponge in a heat-proof bowl and cover with boiling water. Leave for one minute, then carefully pour off the water. Add cold water to cool the sponge, squeeze out excess moisture, and leave it to dry on a radiator or draining rack.

Tip: Use only natural, compostable sponges like those from Seep, which are safer and better for the environment than plastic-filled options. They’re made from renewable materials and break down naturally at the end of their life.

Don’t Put Your Sponges in the Washing Machine

Unlike cloths, sponges aren’t suited to the washing machine. They absorb too much water, which can damage the sponge and even your appliance. Instead, follow the soaking methods above and gently clean them using warm water and a small amount of Bio-D Laundry Liquid. Squeeze well, rinse thoroughly, and leave to dry fully.
