Rethink, Reuse, Recycle: Our Mission to Cut Waste One Bottle at a Time
At Bio-D, sustainability isn’t a trend, it’s the foundation of everything we do. For over 35 years, we’ve been creating ethical, environmentally responsible cleaning products that work hard in your home while being kind to the planet.
One of the biggest ways we’re making an impact is through recycling and more importantly, by designing our packaging to be part of a Closed Loop system. From 100% recycled plastic bottles to refillable solutions that dramatically reduce single-use waste, we’re proud to be leading by example in the green cleaning sector.
In this blog, we’re unpacking how recycling plays a vital role in our mission and how your everyday cleaning choices can help build a cleaner, greener future.
Why Recycling Still Matters in 2025
We all know recycling helps conserve resources and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. But the reality is, UK households still throw away over 26 million tonnes of waste each year and only around 44% of it gets recycled.
While recycling alone won’t solve the climate crisis, it plays a crucial role in reducing our reliance on virgin materials, cutting carbon emissions, and protecting ecosystems. It also supports the shift towards a circular economy, where materials are reused again and again, rather than discarded after a single use.
At Bio-D, we’re not just asking consumers to recycle, we’re building our business around it.
100% Recycled, 100% Recyclable
Every 5L and consumer-sized Bio-D bottle is made from 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic — mostly high-density polyethylene (HDPE), one of the most widely recycled plastics in the UK. The only exception is our clear 500ml hand wash bottles, which are made from recycled PET. This means that the bottle you’re holding in your hand was once another product entirely, perhaps a milk bottle, shampoo container, or household cleaner.
Here’s why that matters:
This commitment to Closed Loop packaging means less waste, less energy use, and a significantly smaller environmental impact.
What Is Post-Consumer Waste Plastic?
Post-consumer waste (PCW) plastic is material that has already been used and recycled by individual, not manufacturing offcuts or pre-consumer leftovers. By using PCW plastic, we’re helping to create demand for recycled material and keep it circulating in the system, rather than allowing it to end up in landfill or incineration.
And because our bottles are made right here in the UK from UK-sourced waste plastic, we also reduce transport emissions and support a more localised recycling economy.
Refills: The Ultimate Recycling Alternative
While recycling is vital, it’s even better to reduce the need for new packaging altogether. That’s why we’ve championed refillable cleaning solutions for years, helping our customers cut down on single-use plastic at the source.
We offer Bio-D products in:
Refills aren’t just good for the planet, they’re often more cost-effective too, especially for households looking to make sustainable choices without breaking the bank.
Recycling Beyond the Bottle
Our commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop at bottles:
By considering the entire life cycle of our packaging, we ensure that every part of our products can be reused, recycled, or returned, not just disposed of.
How You Can Help
You don’t need to overhaul your lifestyle to make a difference. Here are a few simple ways to support recycling at home:
Rinse Before You Recycle
Make sure your plastic bottles and containers are clean and dry; this helps keep recycling streams uncontaminated.
Refill When You Can
Find your nearest Bio-D refill station and start topping up your favourite products, you can also purchase refills via our website. You’ll reduce plastic waste and save money over time.
Buy Recycled
Support brands (like us!) that use recycled materials in their packaging. It creates demand for recycled content and helps close the loop.
Don’t Wish-Cycle
Check your local recycling rules and only put accepted items in your bin. Wish-cycling (recycling items that aren’t accepted) can cause entire loads to be rejected.
Working Together for a Cleaner Future
We know that real change comes not just from individual action, but from businesses taking responsibility for their environmental impact. At Bio-D, we’re proud to be part of that change and to offer everyday products that make it easier for you to live in line with your values.
By choosing cleaning products made from recycled, recyclable and refillable packaging, you’re helping to protect our planet’s resources and reduce waste, one wash, wipe or scrub at a time.
