On Tuesday 16th December, Bio-D’s Sustainability, NPD & Regulatory Manager Heather Nixon was honoured to attend a prestigious Parliamentary Reception at the House of Commons. Hosted by Sarah Champion MP, Chair of the International Development Select Committee, the event was organised by Cruelty Free International to celebrate progress and rally support for the UK’s ambitious vision to end animal testing.

The reception was a powerful gathering of stakeholders, including Members of Parliament from across the political spectrum, industry leaders, and advocates, all united in their shared goal to replace animal testing with innovative, humane, and scientifically advanced alternatives.

The UK government has set a bold agenda to phase out animal testing, demonstrating a commitment to ethical innovation and scientific progress. Key elements of this strategy were highlighted at the event, with the aim of transforming regulatory frameworks and fostering new technologies to eliminate animal use in testing chemicals, consumer products, medicines, and pesticides.

Some of the primary components of the government’s plan include:

  • Replacing Regulatory Animal Tests: Implementing time-bound commitments to end specific animal tests across various sectors.
  • Establishing a UK Centre for Non-Animal Test Validation: Creating a dedicated hub to validate and accelerate the adoption of non-animal test methods.
  • Improving Regulations and Training: Enhancing regulatory standards and supporting training for regulators and researchers in non-animal methodologies.
  • Cross-Government Collaboration and Monitoring: Forming a cross-government group to monitor progress and publish performance indicators regularly.
  • Funding Innovation and Collaboration: Providing new financial support to develop cutting-edge test methods and fostering collaboration through a dedicated hub.

Bio-D’s Proud Stance: Never Tested on Animals

At Bio-D, we have always been steadfast in our commitment to cruelty-free practices. With our own in-house laboratory, we conduct all product development without any animal testing. This ethical foundation is why Bio-D is proud to display the Cruelty Free International logo on every product, assuring customers of our dedication to compassion and sustainability.

Heather Nixon shared her reflections on the reception, emphasising the importance of continued pressure and action:

“It was good to attend the Parliamentary Reception hosted by Cruelty Free International and MP Sarah Champion, the Chair of the International Development Select Committee. So many people are unaware that animal testing continues on dogs, rabbits, mice, and rats! By 2030, the UK plans to end the use of animals for antibody production. This is a cruel practice affecting hundreds of thousands of animals every year. This is a huge step forward, but we need strong, specific, and targeted action to make it happen and go even further. We must keep up the pressure to ensure key commitments are delivered. We’ll never stop pushing for an end to all animal tests.”

The Reality Behind Animal Testing: Why Change Is Critical

Despite advancements, many remain unaware that animal testing is still legally permitted and conducted on animals such as dogs, rabbits, mice, and rats across various industries. These procedures often cause suffering and distress, even when alternatives exist. The cruelty and ethical concerns have spurred the UK government and organizations like Cruelty Free International to campaign vigorously for an end to these practices.

The Parliamentary Reception underscored the urgency of this mission — moving beyond promises to concrete actions and measurable milestones. By establishing new centres, funding innovative research, and improving regulatory pathways, the UK aims to become a global leader in cruelty-free science.

What the Future Holds for Bio-D and the Industry

Bio-D’s participation in this reception reflects our ongoing commitment to sustainability, innovation, and animal welfare. As the UK advances its ambitious timeline to end animal testing, Bio-D will continue to innovate within its own R&D, ensuring all products meet the highest standards of cruelty-free integrity.

We believe in:

  • Investing in scientific alternatives that do not involve animal testing.
  • Promoting regulatory reform that accelerates the acceptance of new, humane testing methods.
