Being B Corp: Bio-D’s road to accreditation

Being B Corp: Bio-D’s road to accreditation

In case you missed it, this week we’ve been celebrating after getting our B Corp accreditation.

If you have missed it, you can read all about that here.

As you can probably imagine, we’re still beaming from ear to ear as we join a family of only 1,000 UK companies to gain B Corp status. What’s more, the reaction from elsewhere has been hugely humbling with love and support from customers, stockists, fellow B Corp companies and many more.

The B Corp title recognises our journey to becoming sustainable in all parts of Bio-D’s business including ingredients, packaging, accountability, workforce and more.

But what does this mean, and how have we achieved this?

The B Corp movement is about changing the rules of the game. This means helping create a different kind of global economy to make business a force for good.

Businesses are awarded a B Corp score based on different aspects of their business. We achieved a score of 80.2, with the average score for businesses that complete the assessment currently at 50.9.

We were assessed on our positive impact on our workers, suppliers, community and the environment in five categories.

These are:

Governance

Aka: The control we have over our impact as a business.

The Governance category looks at our social and environmental impacts, ethics, and transparency. Our mission is simple – to produce ethical cleaning products that don’t cost the Earth.

We were recognised for our Impact Business Model, which is designed to create a positive outcome for workers, the community, environment, and customers. All of our ingredients and packaging can be traced back to the source, meaning full transparency for our customers.

Workers

Aka: How employees are impacted by working for Bio-D

This looked at our contributions to employee financial security, health and safety, wellness, career development, engagement and satisfaction. Within the scoring, we received a huge 9.6 for employee financial security, and 6.8 for their health, wellness and safety.

Community

Aka: Bio-D’s impact on the wider community

This section is all about our engagement with and impact on the communities we operate in, hire from, and source from. This includes diversity, economic impact and charitable giving.

We are active members of Hull City Council’s FareShare scheme that fights hunger and tackles food waste, and we donated our sanitisers to venues throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bio-D is also a Yorkshire Wildlife Trust gold member, helping the charity in its work to reduce flooding, reintroduce species, protect wildlife and more.

Environment

Aka: How we manage our environmental impact

This section evaluates our overall environmental management practices as well as our impact on the air climate, water, land and biodiversity.

We were recognised for producing non-toxic alternatives and cruelty-free products that please the planet, as well as using environmentally responsible packaging and making all of our products with a certification of sustainable manufacturing.

Customer Stewardship

Aka: How we treat our customers and the service they expect from us

The final section looks at how we look after our customers including the quality of products and services. We were also scored on our ethical marketing, data privacy and security practices.

Part of this section includes recognising products designed to address a particular social problem, which we provide with high-quality and non-toxic ingredients that don’t cost the Earth.

We’re immensely proud to have achieved this B Corp accreditation, and we couldn’t have done it without you.

To celebrate the fact that March is B Corp month, keep your eyes peeled for some extra special offers in the next couple of weeks as a little thank you from us.

When we all work together we can change the rules of the game.
