Leading the Way in Eco-Cleaning: Bio-D’s 2024 Sustainability Milestones

Celebrating B Corp Month: Why We Report on Sustainability

March is B Corp Month, making it the perfect time to reflect on our environmental and social impact. As a certified B Corp since 2022, Bio-D is committed to transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement. One of the ways we uphold these values is by publishing our annual Sustainability and Impact Report. We were the first eco-cleaning brand to introduce this level of detailed reporting, ensuring our customers and stakeholders can see exactly how we’re making a difference.

“Our annual Sustainability and Impact Report allows us to take stock of our progress, highlight our successes, and identify areas for continued improvement,” said Lloyd Atkin, Managing Director of Bio-D. “From reducing carbon emissions to innovating in sustainable packaging, our commitment to sustainability is at the core of everything we do.”

Our latest report showcases significant progress in carbon reduction, sustainable packaging, and refill initiatives, reinforcing our commitment to ethical, eco-friendly cleaning solutions. Here’s a closer look at our biggest achievements from 2024.

Reducing Our Carbon Footprint

One of our standout achievements in 2024 is reducing carbon emissions per single product by over 40% in three years, with a 9% reduction in the last year alone. We’ve achieved this through a combination of energy efficiency measures, sustainable packaging improvements, and reduced waste.

We also made major strides in lowering waste related CO2 emissions, cutting them to less than one-third of 2023 levels by carefully planning material use and sharing resources proactively.

Additionally, we’ve:

  • Generated 18% more solar energy than we used on-site, feeding surplus clean energy back into the grid.
  • Reduced business travel by over 30%, minimising our carbon footprint.
  • Encouraged sustainable commuting, with 50% of staff now using eco-friendly transport options.
  • Lowered water related CO2e emissions by 20% through improved processes.

Innovation in Sustainable Packaging: 50% PCR Caps

Sustainable packaging has always been a priority for us, and 2024 marked a major milestone—achieving 50% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content in our 750ml caps. This has been a long-term goal, requiring years of development with packaging suppliers to ensure durability and strength. Reaching this milestone is a huge achievement.

By incorporating PCR into our caps, we’ve saved over three-quarters of a tonne of CO2 emissions, further reinforcing our commitment to reducing plastic waste and carbon impact.

“This is a breakthrough for us,” said Heather Nixion, Sustainability Manager at Bio-D. “It’s taken extensive trialling and testing to reach 50% PCR content without compromising on durability. We’re proud to be ahead of the curve and committed to pushing even further.”

Expanding Our Closed-Loop Refill System

Our ‘No Brainer Container’ initiative continues to grow, helping to close the loop on plastic waste. In 2024, we:

  • Saved over 7.8 tonnes of plastic by reusing returned 20-litre refill containers.
  • Increased re-laundered container numbers by 70% compared to 2023.
  • Saved the equivalent CO2 emissions of 995 trees growing for a year
  • Since its launch in 2021, we’ve successfully re-laundered and reused over 15,000 containers.

Additionally, our focus on larger refill-sized products, including 5L, 20L, and IBC options for wholesalers, meant we avoided producing over 1.75 million single-use consumer bottles in 2024.

Recognised for Our Efforts: The King’s Award for Enterprise

A significant highlight in 2024 was receiving The King’s Award for Enterprise in the Sustainable Development category. This prestigious recognition is a testament to our team’s dedication and our continued efforts to push the boundaries of sustainability in the cleaning industry.

Looking Ahead: Sustainability Goals for 2025

While we’re proud of our achievements, our sustainability journey doesn’t stop here. As we move into 2025, we’re setting new targets to further enhance our environmental impact, including:

  • Investing in additional carbon offset projects to compensate for unavoidable emissions.
  • Commissioning an independent consultant to review our energy usage and identify further efficiencies.
  • Expanding our PCR plastic usage across more packaging components.
  • Continuing to drive innovation in sustainable packaging and refill solutions.

“Our 2025 goals focus on going beyond our current achievements,” added Heather Nixion. “We’re looking at new ways to enhance our sustainability credentials and ensure Bio-D remains a leader in responsible, eco-friendly cleaning.”
