Rethinking Plastic: How Bio-D’s 20L Closed Loop System Powers a Smarter, Sustainable Future This World Refill Day

Celebrating World Refill Day with Real Impact

At Bio-D, sustainability isn’t just a promise, it’s woven into everything we do. As we celebrate World Refill Day, we are proud to share the milestones we’ve achieved through our 20L Closed Loop System and our continued focus on refillable, low waste products.

Our commitment to reducing plastic waste is stronger than ever. In 2024 alone, by focusing on 5L, 20L, and IBC refill sizes, Bio-D helped save the equivalent of over 1.75 million consumer-sized bottles. Through our innovation and dedication, we are helping customers make more sustainable choices, one refill at a time.

The Bio-D 20L Closed Loop System: How It Works

Our Closed Loop System is a game changer in the fight against plastic waste. Instead of discarding our 20L refill containers after use, we relaunder and reuse them, creating a true circular model that keeps plastic in use for longer and out of landfills and oceans.

Here’s how it works:

  • Collection: Used 20L containers are returned to us in pairs or by the pallet load for free by our customers.
  • Re-laundering: Each container is professionally cleaned and sanitised, ensuring it meets our high standards for reuse.
  • Reuse: Containers are then refilled and sent back out for use again, cutting down the need for new plastic production.

By closing the loop, we are dramatically cutting carbon emissions and reducing the demand for virgin plastic materials, a win for both the environment and our customers.

A Year of Progress: Plastic and CO₂e Savings in 2024

In 2024, our Closed Loop service achieved remarkable environmental savings:

  • 7.8 tonnes of plastic saved by re-laundering our 20L containers.
  • A 72.5% increase in the number of containers re-laundered compared to 2023.
  • The CO₂e savings equate to the same as 995 trees growing for a year, a powerful symbol of the positive impact refill models can have on our planet.

Every container reused means less waste, less energy used, and fewer carbon emissions. We are incredibly proud of these results, but we’re even more excited about what lies ahead. With even greater participation from our customers and partners, 2025 is shaping up to be an even bigger year for our Closed Loop system.

Why Refill Matters: The Bigger Picture

The global plastic crisis is one of the most urgent environmental challenges we face. Each year, millions of tonnes of plastic enter our natural environments, harming wildlife, ecosystems, and human health.

Choosing refillable products instead of single use alternatives is one of the simplest and most powerful actions individuals and businesses can take to cut waste and reduce their environmental footprint.

By making refills the norm, not the exception, we’re helping to move society closer to a circular economy, where materials are reused and kept in circulation for as long as possible.

More Sustainable Packaging: PCR Innovation at Bio-D

Refilling is just one part of the solution. We’re also committed to ensuring that even when new packaging is needed, it’s as sustainable as possible.

Here’s how we’re making our packaging greener:

  • 100% of our bottles now contain post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic.
  • 86% of our bottles are made from 100% PCR material.
  • 50% of our caps are made from PCR content, and we are actively working to increase this percentage.

Using PCR materials means that we’re helping to create demand for recycled plastics, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and cutting emissions associated with plastic production. It’s another important way we’re closing the loop on waste.

How You Can Join the Refill Revolution

Celebrating World Refill Day is about recognising the collective power we have to change the future of our planet. Here’s how you can join Bio-D’s refill movement:

  • Choose refill sizes like 5L, 20L, and beyond wherever possible.
  • Return your 20L containers back to us for free here, helping us extend the life of our packaging.
  • Spread the word about the benefits of refilling to friends, family, and colleagues.
  • Support brands and retailers who prioritise circular economy practices.
  • Use local refill shops to top up your Bio-D essentials without buying new packaging.

Every refill counts. Together, we can build a world where reusing is second nature, not an exception.

Looking Ahead to 2025 and Beyond

The future of sustainability lies in innovation, collaboration, and bold action. Our Closed Loop System proves that when businesses and consumers work together, meaningful change is possible.

We are grateful to every Bio-D customer, stockist, and partner who has embraced the refill movement and helped us save plastic, cut carbon emissions, and protect the planet for future generations.

We can’t wait to see how much more we’ll achieve in 2025 as we continue expanding our closed loop programme, driving innovation in PCR packaging, and pushing the boundaries of sustainable business.

Thank you for refilling, reusing, and reimagining the future with Bio-D. Happy World Refill Day!
